Maybelline Tough as Taupe, Edgy Emerald and Painted Purple Color Tattoo Eyeshadow Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Drugstore make-up has been stepping up its game and Maybelline's new cream eyeshadows are my favorite new release! These are supposed to wear 24 hours but I haven't quite tested that claim. I picked up three colors out of the eight or so. One is awesome, another is sheer, the last is disappointing.

My favorite of the three is Tough As Taupe. Edgy Emerald is sheer but builds up smoothly and beautifully. Painted Purple was the worst of the three, streaky and patchy. You have to pat it very gently on your eye to build up the color, not worth the effort (in my opinion). With the exception of the purple, the formula is great! It feels just like a MAC Paint Pot without the high price tag. I haven't noticed them drying out yet so that is an excellent sign since that is the only weakness of the Paint Pots.

Tough As Taupe is the only matte in the entire range as far I could tell. I wore it alone on my slightly oily lids, without a primer or powder shadow to set, and it lasted 8 hours without creasing. Very impressive! These shadows are packaged in a glass pot with a screw top, very similar to the Armani Eyes to Kill Silk shadows. The texture, however, is nothing like the ETK shadows. I will review the L'Oreal Infalliable shadows next week, because it is the only drugstore eyeshadow range that comes even close to the buttery finish of the ETK Silks.

I swatched the purple very carefully. I wanted it to look as smooth as possible..

Bottom Line: These new cream shadows are great bases or can be worn alone as a wash of color on lazy days. For $8 a pop, they're a steal! I'd definitely avoid Painted Purple but any of the other colors should be a safe and worthwhile purchase.

  1. I can't wait to read what you have to say about the L'Oreal Infallible eyeshadows. I have two of them, Bronzed Taupe and Infinite Sky. They are luscious and worth the hype.
