The packaging is simple, a little thoughtless perhaps, but it is practical. The short black plastic body, which attracts fingerprints like mad, has transparent inserts on the front and back to give you a sneak peek of the color. This will come in handy if you choose to throw more than one of these in your purse.
The applicators are very similar to those of Lancome's La Laque Fever glosses, a wide base with a sharp end that allows precise application near the lip lines. The sponge picks color well and applies it smoothly and evenly. The liquid lipstick/stain formula feels lighter than water on initial contact with the lips, but it dries down quickly to a surprisingly saturated, velvety feel. The color is easily buildable and I achieved opaque color with three swipes. The gloss effect is noticeable but not obnoxious, not sticky in the slightest and long-lasting to boot. I'll wear one of these in my favorites video this month so you can see it in action! Expect to see a juicy pout.
Coril Fauve is a translucent (but very pigmented) coral that leans red. In fact, most people just assume I'm wearing a red lipstick! Pinky Vinyl darkens significantly on my lips (see HERE). The color you see in the swatch below is more true to shade 17. I was afraid the shimmers in Pink Vinyl would accentuate my dry lips but the Glossy Stain formula is so hydrating, my lips stayed moisturized for hours! The shimmers did not cause unsightly bumps in the lip color and did not bunch up when I ate or drank. No peeling or dryness whatsoever. I took the heavy swatches below in full sun and I wiped them off a minute later. The photo below is the staining effect! YSL has produced a truly remarkable formula that is unlike any other and I am so impressed. The Glossy Stains are now my favorite lip product from YSL! Golden Glosses are my second pick ;)
Next on my list are some of the palest shades in the line-up, Rose Pastelle 18 and Beige Aquarelle 19. I'll review those next month! Paler stains (and lipstick/gloss shades in general) tend not to wear as well, so I will be sure to report promptly. These are only available at Sephora at the moment, but my YSL Sales Associate says they should hit Nordstrom counters next month or shortly thereafter.
Bottom Line: I highly recommend these Glossy Stains! The formula boasts a rather impressive shade range so there will be something for everyone. I love that YSL provides great colors for women of color as well!

Thanks! They look luscious. Do they have any scent?
ReplyDeleteGail - No scent or taste but my sense of smell is very weak so don't quote me on that ;)
ReplyDeletei'm toying between these and edward bess lip gloss which i know you love; any comparisons as of yet? i like the idea of a stain, because i wanted to like the chanel velvet lipsticks but didn't think a straight up matte lip would work for me. would love to see how they look on the lip! thanks!
ReplyDeletehi rae! may i ask how are these compared to chanel RA laque?
ReplyDeleteDo you like them more than the Edward Bess glosses??
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! The coral is sold out online, darn....Not sure if the pink one will work..... Can u recommend a color that would compliment me? I have fair to light skin and chin length bob that's dark brown with cinnamon face-framing highlights. Thanks so much for the review!
ReplyDeleteLissa - The EB Glosses are a true gloss. Most are sheer to medium pigment and they definitely don't stain the lip. There are no comparisons to this YSL lip stain, color AND gloss!
ReplyDeleteJeng - I discussed that in my Favorites video, which should be live in two hours! :)
Sue - This is more of a lipstick than a gloss so they can't quite fairly be compared ;)
Ehh - I'm wearing the pink one in my Favorites video this month, which is uploading now :) It would definitely work on you! It will contrast your highlights and fair skin beautifully :)
Hi Rae, thanks so much for replying.....I ordered # 7 and 8, it's hard to tell online but they looked really pretty on some blogs I checked out. Thanks for ur advice, I am going to have to get Rose Vinyl too if I like these. Ur description sounds so great. Lipsticks and glosses never last on me so I'm excited to try these. I just picked up the hourglass lip stain in petal and while I do love the color it doesn't stain my lips and fades fast. Thanks again for ur great advice and btw, love the new favorites video and the pink one looks beautiful on u!
ReplyDeleteHi Rae, I saw your review and ended up getting the #20, Rouge Enamel. I have a horrible time finding a good red because they're mostly too cool for me, but this one was perfect. My lips always have a peeling problem in the winter and I was surprised how creamy this made my lips feel--as for the scent people are asking about, it smells like sangria at first. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteEhh - I just posted swatches of most of the colors, if you're curious! I bought 7 today, love it! Hope you love them as much as I do :)
ReplyDeleteWini - Yes, 20 is a wonderful red for those with warm-toned complexions, not too much contrast. And thank you so much for the smell hint.. I wish I could smell like normal people do! LOL <3
i find them very dry on my lips! do you put a base on your lips before you use them? i own nr. 10 and 12 and the are drying out my lips unfortunately!
ReplyDeleteDont - Not at all! My lips are very dry and sensitive and when I take them off at the end of the day, my lips look just as good, if not better, than when I put them on. I don't use a base underneath, just swipe & go!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reviewing the YSL Glossy Stains. I purchased 15 Rose Vinyl based on your review and I absolutely love it. My lips are very pigmented and it is very difficult to find a pink that will show up. I am so glad that you recommended these.
