Kevyn Aucoin The Loose Shimmer Shadow Review, Photos, Swatches [7 SHADES]

The Kevyn Aucoin Loose Shimmer Shadow ($29 USD each) is the only loose eyeshadow formula that I will use. I love the unique shade selection and how the colors glimmer as they catch light. These shadows are finely milled, so they will never look glittery or heavy on the lids. The consistency is feather-light, but the colors have so much impact because of the pearlescent pigments, which is why I am addicted to these Loose Shimmer Shadows! Check out the gorgeous swatches after the jump!

If the metallic and frosty finishes of some Kevyn Aucoin's powder eyeshadows do not appeal to you, give The Loose Shimmer Shadows a try. I personally love both formulas and use them as often as I do Tom Ford or Shu Uemura and YSL eyeshadows. There are no solid or chunky glitter particles in these KA Loose shimmer eyeshadows, but they boast a truly remarkable multi-dimensional effect that mimics the look of tiny crystals. LOVE!

To maintain the most long-lasting 'sparkly' effect, use an eyeshadow base to prime the lids. On days when I want a more natural finish, I use these Loose Shimmer Shadows on my bare lids. I do recommend patting it on with your fingertip for the most intense and opaque color pay off (as well as minimal fallout), but the Loose Shimmers adhere well enough on my normal eyelids without primer.

Old Packaging vs. New Packaging
Some have expressed concern over the large rollerball tip applicator, but I love the way it glides across my eyelids! Though it is a different sensation than most of us are accustomed to, I have grown to like it. I usually push the rollerball across my eyes 3 to 4 times to create the most even, opaque application of color possible. I then blend just the edges of the eyeshadow with a brush to maintain the unique saturated glimmering effect, but that is my preference. Some prefer using a fluffy brush to create a veil of color as opposed to the more dramatic coverage seen in my swatches.

Flash
I love the brightness of Citrine, and it is rare to find such a wearable sunshine yellow! My most used thus far has been Rose Quartz, which many YouTube viewers ask about every time I feature it. It has such a natural luster that enhances all eye colors, and it also glimmers the most. I love Candlelight, which is a soft nude highlighter shade with a hint of peach that will suit any complexion. Kunzite was an unexpected love, but I have fallen head over heels for this seashell pink! It has quite a bit of white shimmer, which makes it perfect for cut-crease looks. Sunstone is an orange-terracotta that looks loveliest and most natural on medium to dark complexions. It will also make blue eyes pop, so fair-complected ladies should also give it a whirl! Topaz is a perfect brown, just warm enough without venturing into khaki or bronze territory. Amethyst has a pink base and is the most matte in finish. It is undeniably pretty, especially in natural light, but it is my least used Loose Shimmering Shadow.

Natural Light
If you struggle with blending or prefer low maintenance eyeshadow, definitely give these eyeshadows a try! I love how effortlessly they blend alone or with other eyeshadows. My favorites are Kunzite, Rose Quartz, Citrine, and Candlelight, but all of them are worth a try.

You can find Kevyn Aucoin's The Loose Shimmer Shadows at SpaceNK, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale's.

Bottom Line: These Kevyn Aucoin Loose Shimmering Shadows are one of my Top 5 eyeshadow picks because of the stunning pearlescent pigments and beautiful color selection!

  1. (Sorry if this comment went through twice)
I am confused by your application recommendation, first you say to pat the product on with a fingertip for the most opaque application, then you say to roll the rollerball across the eye 3-4 times for the most opaque application.

    1. First, roll it across the eye. Then for additional "wow" factor, you can pat on extra with your fingertip. If you dislike the rollerball, you can skip the first step and apply only with your fingertip.

  2. I told myself I wasn't going to buy anymore shadows for a while but this post makes it really hard... I might have to try them haha. Thanks for a great review!
