REVIEW | Best of Budget Beauty Buys ♡ Affordable Recommendations

As I shared recently, I have moved back to San Diego and have been settling in. I have made it my mission since going back to esthetician school to discover the best in affordable skin care and beauty because I want you to know that beautiful skin is achievable regardless of budget. I have worked with dermatologists (professionally and personally) so here I’ll be weighing in on the budget buys that are actually worth the money. And yes, I purchased all these products myself

Sometimes people ask me if I use anything affordable and it makes me laugh. Not because I’m being snooty, but because I realized I should probably talk about my budget beauty staples more often! I’ve partnered with Walmart to share my go-to products, especially because they offer next day delivery so I don’t even have to go to the store. I keep my beauty stash stocked with these essentials and have repurchased them again and again::
  1. Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel-Cream was recommended by my dermatologist Dr. Chiu for use after she gave me the most intense (and most effective) chemical peel I’ve ever experienced. My skin was basically raw. Since it was so fresh, sensitive, fragile, and easily irritated, she told me I needed something gentle and simple, without any actives, to soothe and calm. I only like the Gel-Cream from the HydroBoost line because it feels the most comfortable on my skin. I still use this any time my skin is freaking out and also before going to the gym since it doesn’t clog my pores.
  2. Differin Adapalene 0.01% Acne Treatment is a product that was once RX only, but now it’s available at Walmart for the lowest price I could find at $10.88 on rollback. My dermatologist had prescribed me a different big brand name adapalene topical treatment, and I paid an arm and a leg, even with my insurance. The Differen works almost as well for a fraction of the cost! Since my break outs are usually limited to period week, I tend to use the Differin as a spot treatment instead of all over the face. It works really well on wrinkles and fine lines as well, so it is a great multi-tasking skin care booster that you can treat as a serum.
  3. Clean and Clear Night Relaxing Cleansing Wipes smell heavenly, a hint of lavender. I have been using these for two years, and my dermatologist gave me the green light to keep using them. No break outs, even when I fall asleep without rinsing after on those very rare drunken nights. These wipes are so thick and fully saturated but not dripping wet. I find a lot of wipes too dry or too greasy. These are just right! Although they're oil free, they are able remove all traces of waterproof mascara without stinging my eyes.

  4. Dove Body Wash Mousse with Rose Oil is something I decided to try because my friend Sabrina of The Beauty Look Book raved about it. I have extremely dry body skin so I normally stay away from foaming products, but I find this hydrating. The whipped formula is fun to use, quite plush and velvety which makes it a convenient double for shaving cream. It smells like a heavenly rose garden. This is, by far, the best affordable body cleansing product that I’ve ever tried! I plan to try the Argan Oil one next.
  5. L’Oreal Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara is the best mascara under $10. Since it holds curl, lengthens, and doesn’t clump, I hoard this and use this on all my brides and bridesmaids. A lot of waterproof mascaras tend to flake off after drying, but this one does not. I test a lot of mascaras, but this is the best on the market for the price! I actually wear the regular (non-waterproof) on my lower lashes every day in the wintertime, but now that it’s summer I stick to the waterproof one.
  6. Beautyblender Micro Mini Sponges were a surprise find! I had no idea that Walmart carried them, so I was thrilled to get these discounted. I think these tiny ones are underrated because they are versatile and much easier to keep clean than the full-sized one. I use them for concealer, foundation, and contour. Once I received my order and was sure the quality was the same as all the other Beautyblender minis in my collection, I ordered a few more sets to keep in bridal kit. They’re way easier to keep clean and I find the size, when damp, expands to the perfect size for smaller faces.
  7. Eylure False Lashes are some of the very best in the business. I like all their natural styles and keep them well stocked in my kit, but their bigger layered styles suit my eye shape best. These Vegas Nay by Eylure Grand Glamour false eyelashes are only $4 which I think are quite a steal, making them my go-to pair for day to day wear. They’re light enough where I can wear them all day, but pretty enough where I can wear them alone or with eyeshadow.

The following products are new to my collection but they earned a two thumbs up:
  1. L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Les Macarons Scented Liquid Lipsticks in Mon Caramel, Guava Crush, and Praline de Paris. I don't recommend drinking or eating while wearing these, but I absolutely LOVE the way they look on. I slowly build three layers, using my middle finger to firmly press the formula into my lips as it dries down. It helps the color adhere to the lips, creating texture and volume in a way that looks natural (without having to draw outside the lip lines).
  2. L’Oreal Infallible Waterproof Full Coverage Concealer is something I keep in my bridal kit lately. I use it like a foundation, since it is waterproof, and blend it out thoroughly on top of the Hydroboost Gel-Cream in addition to a hydrating primer if necessary. It works really well as a cream contour as well. I am highly impressed by this concealer and use it on myself! It reminds me of Tarte’s Shape Tape, but it blends out just as well and doesn’t oxidize whatsoever and is significantly more affordable. I mix shades Vanilla and Cashew with my Micro Mini Sponges by Beautyblender to create a seamless blend.
  3. Real Techniques Everyday Essentials Makeup Set is raved about by everyone online, so I finally caved. I use them mostly for cream products like foundation, concealer, and highlighter blush. Normally I find that synthetic brushes are a pain to wash, but these were a breeze. I really enjoy the largest fluffy brush for layering on base products and the smaller powder brush for concealer or highlighter. The construction of the brushes is top notch for the price and will be purchasing more in the future!
  4. Essie Gel Couture Nail Polish in Sheer Fantasy was a random splurge. Since I am an esthetician and touch people’s faces and skin, I no longer get acrylic nails and do my own manicures at home. I now prefer sheers since they are easy to apply and remove. Two thin coats of Sheer Fantasy exceeded all my expectations. The color is a slightly milky pale pink-nude, softening the appearance of my rather stark nail line. My nails look polished with minimal effort!
  5. Essie Gel Couture Platinum Grade Top Coat caught my eye while browsing through the gel polish colors. I wasn’t going to bother with the top coat since I change my polish every four days now to keep my nails short and pristine, but wow, it is an excellent dupe for the Chanel Gel Top Coat! I’m super impressed!! It dries quickly and it looks glossy without feeling thick or goopy. The glossy effect fades noticeably after four days, but I wash my hands constantly and use chalk when during my barbell work outs.
  6. Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter in Molten Peach is another beauty buy that was influenced by Sabrina. I am not sure I love this as a highlighter but it does make for a beautiful eyeshadow! There are some larger silver shimmer particles that make it pop on my lids. I put it on my lower lash lines in my Best of Budget Beauty Buys Video for a brightening effect.
  7. EcoTools Bristle Bath Brush is my latest bath time essential because it keeps my back acne at bay. The summer skin struggle is real! I really enjoy backless tops, but racebacks and sports bras tend to trap sweat and clog pores. The bristles of this brush are soft but exfoliate the skin well so I use it every day now. My shoulder mobility is somewhat limited from sleeping on my right shoulder, so the long handle of the brush helps me reach the areas of my upper back that are difficult to scrub with a handheld loofa.

I am a creature of habit, but I keep an open mind and am always willing to try new products, especially skin care now that my complexion is calm and clear. I’d love to know any budget beauty buys that you can’t live without, so please let me know what you think I should try next in the comments!

TRY + TELL | Bioré Charcoal Pore Minimizer Review

Bioré Charcoal Pore Minimizer is a newcomer to the pore cleansing game. I have tried Bioré pore cleansing nose strips before, but I was intrigued by this formula. It is infused with natural charcoal and micro-crystals and promises results with just one use!

As Bioré writes on the bottle, pores filled with dirt and oil can magnify their appearance, making them look larger and more noticeable. It can be difficult, however, to find an exfoliator that cleanses and smoothes without drying out the skin.

I love that this Charcoal Pore Minimizer activates with water. Just dispense one pump into wet hands and work into a rich lather. Massage gently and immediately rinse thoroughly.

I do think it will be best suited for oily skin types since it absorbs excess oil so efficiently, but I have normal to dry skin that is easily clogged around the nose and chin. For this reason, I exfoliate at least once a week. I started testing this Charcoal Pore Minimizer without much expectation, but I am impressed! After walking around all day in Tokyo's intense humidity and then sitting in dehydrating plane air for 10 hours straight, an embarrassing amount of clogged pores on my nose had sprouted up. This Bioré scrub smoothed my skin and left my pores visibly smaller!

I have tried plenty of mid-range and high-end charcoal-based skin care in the past. I never found any of those scrubs, masks, and cleansers worth their price tags, but for $10 a pop, this Bioré Charcoal Pore Minimizer is a must-have. For optimal results, 2-3 uses per week is recommended. That may be more appropriate for oily skin. On my normal to dry skin, I think once a week all over the face and once more on problem areas like the nose will be best!

We all experience clogging no matter our skin type (oily, combination, normal, dry), so I highly recommend this scrub to everyone!

Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate Review and Photos

Shiseido's new Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate is a one-of-a-kind, boosting, power-infusing face concentrate for youthful looking skin. In case you haven't heard, skincare boosters are the new generation of 'must-have' products because they supercharge your skin. Ultimune takes it one step further with a new preventative approach to skincare by focusing on immunity.

With Ultimune, Shiseido embraces an Eastern holistic philosophy that aims to unleash the skin's potential power to become beautiful with a unique botanical cocktail. Gingko biloba leaf extract, perilla, and wild thyme, which are known for their strong anti-bacterical properties, will help maintain a healthy-looking skin surface. Ultimune is intended to resist, protect, restore, and strengthen, leaving skin feeling silky and nourished. The treatment enhances the skin's essential multi-defensive power against visible signs of aging, environmental factors, and daily stress.

Best of all, Ultimune is designed for all skin types and age groups, regardless of skin concerns. It can be introduced into any skin care regimen and will boost the performance and benefits of any serums and moisturizers that follow. I remove my makeup with a cleansing oil, wash my face with a liquid or cream cleanser, and then apply the Ultimune after toner. The consistency is light, so it absorbs quickly and does not leave any residue or glitter on the skin.

After a couple weeks of use, my skin's texture was smoother and more consistently moisturized. I suffer from dry patches around my nose and near my eyes, and I can positively say Ultimune did help treat them. My skin looked clearer and more even toned as well, with my pores looking smaller than ever! I do not have wrinkles, but I do find that my skin feels more resilient. Also worth mentioning is that the scent is subtle — perfect for those with sensitive noses!

Shiseido claims that immunity is your skin's ultimate defense against damage. I always preach prevention, so this new Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate is a great place to begin or amp up your skin care journey. Never forget the sunscreen and unleash the #beautyinyou with Ultimune! Apply both day and night for best results.

Bottom Line: Not only will Shiseido's Ultimune enhance your skin's immunity and shrink the appearance of your pores, but it will also give you a boost of confidence!

October 2013 Favorites [Hits & Misses] Featuring Guerlain, Chanel, 3LAB, EM Michelle Phan, etc.

October was a relatively relaxed beauty month. As some of you may have noticed, I was unable to post twice a week as I generally aim for. I experienced a few issues with my stomach and body aches the past couple weeks, but I am finally getting better! It feels good to film again, so I hope these favorites will be useful. Guerlain nail polish formulas are really giving my Chanel collection a run for the money, though I will always prefer Chanel's color selection. I am also loving Benefit, especially the new lip gloss I reviewed and the Gimme Brow Gel that I will use in a video later this week (please stay tuned)! I had to cut the Gimme Brow out of the video due to time constraints, but I know many of you are looking forward to a tutorial so I will feature it in action.
And if you haven't read my Best of 3LAB Review, please do check it out HERE because I think I have discovered my Holy Grail skin care brand. The products are expensive, but I have never been so pleasantly surprised by anti-aging skin care in years! Many of my readers and viewers think I still look young, but I am nearly 25 and can see slight signs of aging on my forehead. I am doing what I can to prevent the wrinkling from deepening as best as I can and reduce pigmentation/scars while I am at it! Last but not least, do check out the EM Cosmetics Waterliner eye pencils, which have incredible staying power on the waterlines. I am so thrilled with how budge-proof the metallic shades like Ro's Gold and Turquoise are!

Best of 3LAB -- PERFECT Cream, C Eye Treatment, Body Cream, Facial Wash, and BB Cream Reviews, Photos, Swatches

3LAB is superior skincare straight from the lab. I was recently introduced to this brand by my sister, who is a big fan of the Perfect BB Cream. I insisted that no BB Cream could win me over more than the Kiehl's silicone-free BB, but she proved me wrong. The more I discover about this brand, the more I am convinced that beauty insiders who tout this as the perfect anti-aging skin care are correct! There are 3LAB products for every skin care need, like reversing the sign of aging, improving the health of skin or preventing future damage. Even celebrities like Jennifer Lopez are fans of the product, so check out the individual product reviews after the jump!

Lancôme DreamTone Customized Skin Tone Correcting Serum for Dark Spots, Uneven Skin Tone, and Color Imperfections

Lancôme recently introduced a trio of new serums to their powerful skin care line-up, and I have been flooded with requests on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to review it. I am glad to announce that I will indeed be reviewing DreamTone sometime this month, and I will begin testing the product this weekend. I am so excited to share my thoughts with you because I have seen so many rave reviews online already! For now, here is some information on these new customized skin tone correcting serums.

WHO IS IT FOR?
DreamTone is for the woman seeking visible dark spot correction and a more even skin tone. She wants skin so naturally beautiful, she can dare to bare her skin.

WHAT IS IT?
DreamTone is a new generation skin tone clarifying serum that not only corrects the look of dark spots, but also goes beyond to correct the appearance of uneven skin tone and color imperfections. The serum is customized to skin's specific needs — such as treating the look of dark spots or redness.

WHAT DOES IT TARGET?
A global study on women of multiple ethnicities resulted in three formulas adapted to specific skin tones:
  • Fair: Corrects the appearance of dark spots, uneven skin tone, dullness and provides specific color correction for the look of redness
  • Medium: Corrects the appearance of dark spots, uneven skin tone, dullness and provides specific color correction for the look of sallowness (olive)
  • Dark: Corrects the appearance of dark spots, uneven skin tone, dullness and provides specific color correction for the look of acne & blemish marks

HOW DOES IT ENHANCE SKIN TONE?
Based on the L'Oréal Skin Color Chart and using the Fitzpatrick scale, soft-focus tinted pearls were carefully selected for each formula. As a result, each skin tone can enjoy the benefits of light scattering technology that refracts and diffuses, for a more even and radiant surface that is perfectly complimented with just the right amount and type of light.

THE RESULTS
Immediately: 74% saw glowing skin
7 Days: 70% reported a more even skin tone and 76% saw dullness reduced
4 Weeks: 69% noted the appearance of dark spots reduced
8 Weeks: 78% saw color imperfections reduced
SO POWERFUL, 72% OF WOMEN DARED TO BARE THEIR SKIN!

PRICING & AVAILABILITY:
$98 (1.3 oz.)
Available this Fall at Lancôme counters and www.lancome.com

NOTE: I have been asked what the difference between Visionnaire and DreamTone is, as I have been one of Visionnaire's biggest fans since its release. Since I have not yet tried DreamTone on my face, I assume the primary distinction is that Visionnaire focuses on tightening up the pores and smoothing out lines while DreamTeam is intended specifically for correcting dark spots and other color imperfections. I will report back in the review what the differences in texture and results are!

THE TEN: Best Anti-Aging Skincare Products

Today is all about the best products for preventing the lines and reducing the dark spots that are a dead giveaway of a mature or maturing complexion. I have been using anti-aging products for several years now, and I attribute my lack of crow's feet and wrinkles (despite a wonky sleeping schedule) due to the preventative methods I have taken.
NOTE: Many of the products below are some of the best but not necessarily the most affordable, so I recommend exploring popular options from LifeCell, Juice Beauty, or Paula's Choice if there is a budget to be respectful of.

1. OLE HENRIKSEN Truth Serum Vitamin C Collagen Booster ($48 USD for 1 oz)
An antioxidant-rich brightening and nourishing serum enriched with Vitamin C, the lightweight Truth Serum absorbs quickly and easily into the skin. This serum supports natural collagen production, brightens the complexion and minimizes fine lines. I love the iconic uplifting citrus scent that is not too tart or too heavy-handed.

This product is a groundbreaking serum grounded in plant extracts that is recommended for all ages, all skin types, and all ethnicities. The dual chamber system combines two formulas into one serum to make the skin firmer, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, produce a more even skintone, and minimize pores. This formula delivers on all fronts and and the beautiful floral scent calms the nerves during application.

3. LA MER The Regenerating Serum ($290 USD)
This serum has one of the most exorbitant price tags ever. Believe it or not, it is entirely justified. My lovely La Mer Sales Associate generously stocked me with samples last year, which I've been using sparingly. I plan to splurge on the 1 oz bottle soon since it makes a noticeable difference in the feel of my skin. The texture is silky, gliding across the face and soothing redness as well as imperfections.

4. JENU Active Youth Eye Treatment ($52 USD)
You do need to purchase the JeNu ultrasound wand to get the most of this eye cream, but it might be an investment worth making. Techies will especially love it since this 'activated' Eye Treatment will improve the appearance of wrinkles in as few as 14 days. I saw a difference in restored skin elasticity and more importantly, refined texture of the eye contour with regular use.

5. LANCÔME Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Eye Cream ($68 USD)
A luxurious eye cream enriched with multi-tension technology to lift and firm the skin. I love the richness of the cream, but it absorbs quickly. The eye contour area feels smoother and firmer, while eye bags are deflated and dark circles are reduced. I also recommend the Rénergie Eye Multiple Action if you want an eye cream that comes stacked with a sheer concealer 'veil' that helps to brighten up the whole face. It's a very efficient, travel-friendly treatment.

6. LANCÔME Genifique Repair Crème ($100 USD)
This is one of the best night creams I have ever used. Those with dry to combination skin types will appreciate the hydration boost of this formula. Most reviews online rave about how users saw a difference in their wrinkles after a few uses. I did not have wrinkles to start with, but my complexion always looked and felt more supple and refreshed after each use.
Note: This cream contains mineral oil so it might be best to avoid this one if you know your skin reacts negatively to this particular ingredient.

7. SHISEIDO Bio-Performance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream ($75 USD for 1.7 oz)
Prevent the first stages of line prevention with this richly textured, ultra-hydrating formulation. I find it particularly excellent on normal to very dry skin because it is very effective at boosting skin's resilience. My grandmother swears by this Super Revitalizing Cream and prefers it to even more expensive options. This product makes a great gift for moms.

8. KATE SOMERVILLE Daily Deflector Waterlight Sunscreen ($48 USD for 1.7 oz)
This ultralight formula blends effortlessly into the skin, provides hydration, broad spectrum SPF 50+ protection, and antiaging benefits. It works well alone and under makeup. You can read the full review here, but this is a sunscreen worth trying even if you don't like SPF. Always remember that sunscreen is the best investment in preventing lines or wrinkles and discolorations.

9. DIOR DiorSnow White Reveal UV Shield Sunscreen ($58 USD for 1.3 oz)
Dior's face sunscreen will defend and moisturize the skin, leaving it soft and even. The DiorSnow range is excellent in its own right and is an ideal alternative to the Kate Somerville sunscreen for those with dry skin. I have tried both the older discontinued as well as the newly reformulated and repackaged UV Shield formulas.

10. PETER THOMAS ROTH Max Complexion Correction Pads ($36 USD)
These exclusively formulated pads were designed to cleanse skin, clear up blackheads, refine pores, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. The glycolic and beta hydroxy acids clarify the skin instantly. This formula is one of the few that combats my blackheads effectively, and the 60 dual-textured pads can be cut in half to last up to 120 uses. I use these once or twice a week as a toner (no rinsing).
