SKIN | Q&A with My Dermatologist, Dr. Nancy Samolitis + Epic Retinol Giveaway

From my Instagram
My smart and sweet new dermatologist is Dr. Nancy J. Samolitis, who recently opened Facile Skin in West Hollywood, CA. I went to see her to try a chemical peel to boost the results I have been seeing with my retinols, and I loved her so much that I've decided to start seeing her every month! Since I've been using the PCA Clarity Retinol diligently for the last couple months, I had a handful of questions for her.

1. What exactly is a retinol and why is it a popular ingredient?
Retinol has been around for at least 50 years and is one of the few skin treatments that has been proven over-and-over to improve one's skin. Retinol is basically a Vitamin A derivative from animals so it's already in our bodies.

2. What are the expected results from regular retinol use?
Adding retinol into your regular skincare routine will increase your skin's natural cell turnover rate, remove dead skin cells that clog pores and increase collagen production. Some of the other benefits are the reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, breakouts and discolorations. I really love PCA SKIN and its new collection of R-OH Retinol Solutions are formulated with additional support ingredients to effectively target areas of concern such as aging, discoloration or acne. One tip to remember with retinol is that you have to use it regularly as prescribed and be patient with it as it takes time to see results.

3. Since I suffer from hormonal acne, how can retinol help to fight breakouts?
Retinol helps to fight breakouts by reducing oil production, inflammation and by stimulating cell turnover so cells don't get trapped in the pores which is where acne starts.

4. Will retinol help with my acne scarring?
It certainly does help to fade any spots and minimize the appearance of scars and it will clear and brighten your complexion. In fact, we chose PCA SKIN as our only retinol product to carry at FACILE, not only because it's our favorite but it's a great option for people that don't tolerate Retin-A.

People concerned about breakouts and scars should consider the PCA SKIN Intensive Clarity Treatment because it's specifically formulated for acne with added ingredients — including niacinamide and the acne drug salicylic acid — that effectively complement retinol for fighting breakouts.

5. Which strength retinol is the best?
When it comes to retinol, stronger does not mean better. It's all about the delivery system and not the percentage that is stated on the package. Unlike over-the-counter options, PCA SKIN's R-OH Retinol Solutions do not base their efficiency on just percentages but uses its OmniSome delivery technology to protect and carry ingredients deep into the skin. This multilayered liposome delivers the retinol in a time-released fashion over ten hours to increase efficacy, delivering better results.

6. Why does retinol cause irritation? Can you use it if you have sensitive skin?
Retinol does have the potential to overstimulate the skin which can cause redness and peeling. A lot of retinol products are packaged in a way that does not carry the product in the best way. The good news is that the right delivery systems, like the OmniSome delivery system, can greatly help when it comes to irritation that is common with retinol use.

With a smart delivery system, retinol is delivered into the deeper layers of skin, instead of just sitting on the surface of the skin, which is what results in irritation. One reason retinol is a good choice for skin care is that is inherently less irritating that the prescription retinoic acid, which is effective, but quite irritating.

7. Do I have to avoid the sun completely while using retinol?
It's a wide myth that retinol makes your skin sensitive and turn red but there is no reason that you can't use retinol if you're spending time in the sun. Just make sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen, reapply frequently, and avoid direct exposure to the treated areas. It's a fact that the sun exposure is what causes a lot of the damage that we are trying to correct with retinol in the first place.

Now that I have fallen in love with PCA SKIN's Intensive Clarity Treatment for my acne, I absolutely can't live without it. PCA SKIN has generously donated three grand prize retinol skincare regimens — one for Acne, one for Aging, and one for Discoloration. Each of these PCA SKIN power house packages includes five handpicked products and is valued at over $300, so don't miss out on this exclusive opportunity to try some of the most efficacious skin care on the market!

The best news is that my first two hundred readers to sign up for any of the grand prizes below, will receive a retinol trio sampler including the Intensive Clarity Treatment®: 0.5% pure  retinol night to reduce and prevent breakouts, the Intensive Brightening Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night to reduce wrinkles and build collagen, and the Intensive Brightening Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night to reduce dark spots and skin yellowing. So no matter what your concern is, there's a retinol solution for you! We will be emailing the first 200 very soon, so please make sure you sign up with an email address that you actually check. That way, we can send off the samples to you sooner!

In my recent October Favorites, I hinted at a huge skin care giveaway that would be open internationally. Here, I deliver with SK-II's Pitera Essence Sets, $99 each! Since November and December are all about holiday cheer and giving, I wanted to find a way to share something I love with as many of you as possible. It's time to pamper yourself!

Follow The RAEviewer on the Bloglovin' App!

Download the awesome Bloglovin' App to stay up to date!
In case you haven't head from my October Favorites video, I have planned to start creating lots of exclusive content for the blog! So many of you have asked to see more of the products that I brought home with me from Japan and Korea. Since swatches and reviews for brands such as ADDICTION, THREE, Laduree and Piccasso can be hard to come by, I have decided to make it my mission to show you the best of what Asia has to offer!

Lots of my readers are busy working professionals. That means you might not always have time to read a blog post as soon as it goes live! Luckily, bloglovin' allows you to save stories that you want to go back and read. You can also save the post if there are swatches that you need to reference again! I'm all about efficiency these days, so I love how convenient this is. My bookmarks folder has finally been cleared out!

I also love how you can discover other blogs through the bloglovin' app. I really enjoy discovering new fashion blogs and fitness blogs because they really inspire me to be better and do better. I'm trying to dress my age - stylishly, if possible - instead of wearing lululemon everywhere. I'm also still in the process of losing weight and toning up, which means I need fairly constant motivation! I've also started exploring interior design blogs through bloglovin' because seeing beautifully designed spaces make me feel relaxed and get my creative juices flowing.

Now for everyone's favorite bit of news! There are tons of giveaways planned this upcoming Fall/Holiday season, meaning you won't want to miss a single post because I might get sneaky with them. There's a luxury skin care contest launching this week, so following my blog on bloglovin' will give you immediate knowledge of when this special giveaway goes live! You won't have to filter through your inbox spam or type in my entire blog url manually in your browser anymore; just head to the app to find my post and sign up for a chance to win from there.
P.S. Yes, this one will be open internationally and believe it or not, there will be TEN WINNERS!!

Get Ready With Me | Morning Skin Care Routine and Coral Makeup Look + GIVEAWAY

Today I'll be revealing my totally bare face (OMG) and showing you how my acne scars have been healing. I have been hesitant and planned to wait because I still suffer from patches of clogged pores and hormonal acne, but the cystic purging has stopped and my skin finally does look significantly better without makeup! I've been fairly diligent about using whitening products and hydrating serums to reduce the appearance of the scars, and I've realized that Shu Uemura's quality skin care is absolutely perfect for morning regimens. The products create a flawless and plump base for foundation. I'm in love! The most important news, however, is that Shu Uemura just launched a fabulous new exfoliating and whitening cleansing oil that I am obsessing over. My 2015 Lunar New Year Goals + GIVEAWAY

The Lunar New Year is fast approaching, and 2015 is the Year of the Goat! In celebration of the event, I decided to share my resolutions and goals for this year. Many on you have realized I have lost quite a bit of weight since November 2014 (over 10 pounds), and I have steadily worked towards it by eating healthier day to day. I also control my junk food and sweet tooth cravings without completely depriving my taste buds. I eat a clean, balanced diet with luxurious little treats throughout the week — especially during that time of the month — and cook at home from scratch as much as possible. I am still working on incorporating regular exercise, but I hope to reach that goal very soon!

I also plan to travel more this year, but I have made it a goal to become a more efficient traveler. I used to feel very anxious about flights and pack in extreme excess, especially my beauty products. Now, I have learned (and am still learning) how to pack lighter using multi-functional products like Hourglass' new Equilibruim Face Oil and a passport holder that also functions as a wallet! These little changes have decreased my stress less while traveling. I've also learned how to best take care of my skin during flights, so I think that helps me relax more comfortably as well.

My last goal is to fix my sleeping schedule, which has been a constant work in progress for years. Jetlag can feel pretty miserable, but I have been combating it with stretching and casual yoga at home whenever possible. I hope to sleep by 10:30 and wake up at 6:30, but I know that it is more realistic to plan for 11:30 to 7:30 at the moment. No matter how healthy I eat, I realize that an abnormal sleeping schedule throws off my body's rhythm. I really want to boost my productivity and creativity this year, and that starts with better sleeping habits!

Now it's your turn to share! Share your #YoGoatGoals with me on Instagram, and you'll be entered to win the limited edition Goat Chocolate Collection! Just snap a photo representing your goals and use the hashtag #YoGoatGoals to enter to win. The Lunar New Year Year of GODIVA giveaway held here on the blog, however, is the grand prize — a year's worth of GODIVA's legendary chocolates!

I try to limit myself to one piece of chocolate every couple days, so I've been gobbling down the 3 limited edition goat piece flavors first. The Chrysanthemum and Ginger white chocolate is an unusual confectionary combination, but as a ginger fan, I find it truly memorable. I admit I was a bit hesitant about the Gui Flower and Ginseng milk chocolate, but it may be my favorite of the bunch! I love the way the flavor combination hits all my taste buds. The Jasmine and Angelica Root flavor is delicate but still has presence while allowing the 72% chocolate to shine. The other 14 chocolates in the Lunar New Year Collection Collection box features GODIVA's other luscious Belgian chocolates, so you get a taste of new exotics as well as traditional classics.

Do swing by a GODIVA (store locator here) to treat yourself to these lovely chocolates. GODIVA online is also offering some more beautifully packaged Lunar New Year Gifts, so keep them in mind when shopping for your family and friends! Good luck with the giveaways xo

Bronze Diva Summer Giveaway! Feat. Clarins, Tarte, Amika

To celebrate the arrival of summer, I wanted to host a giveaway for all my readers who love to tan! Please wear sunscreen and protect your skin whenever possible. To promote the message of safe and healthy tanning, I wanted to share 3 of my favorite self-tanning products for the face!
I highly recommend the Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster ($30 USD), which is a unique made-to-measure self tanning product for the face that is meant to be mixed into your daily and/or evening moisturizer. The Glow Booster makes radiant, sun-kissed skin so easy to achieve! The Tarte Maracuja Bronzing Serum ($47 USD) is a skin care product that creates a gradual tan. You can spread this multitasking elixir on both face and neck, and it will also help the first signs of aging for a brighter and smoother complexion. The convenient Tarte Brazilliance Skin Rejuvenating Maracuja Self Tanning Face Towelettes ($21 USD) are a diva's must-have this season. Throw these into your beach bag or pack them into a carry-on for your upcoming summer vacation. These towelettes are perfect for those who do not have time for a gradual treatment and need some color immediately!
These 3 amazing self tan goodies will allow you to maintain a gorgeous, sexy tan that looks totally natural without incurring any sun damage. Furthermore, you'll be able to avoid that awkward bobblehead look with a super tan body and pale face!

To complete this 'Bronze Diva' summer giveaway, I wanted to include the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo and Undone Texture Spray. These two lovely purse-sized products are ideal for touch ups to your tousled goddess hair while on the go, and the best part is that they smell amazing! Last but not least, always remember to pack a travel-sized makeup remover when going away on holiday, like the Shu Uemura Fresh Cleansing Oil included here in the Bronze Diva Summer Giveaway!

This contest will end on Monday, June 30th, 2014 at 11:59 AM PST. I will announce the winner here and on Twitter! Please make sure to keep an eye out and claim your prize if you are the winner. Best of luck xo

THE WINNER IS Emmy P. Congratulations and thanks to all those who entered! xo

Sigma F25 Copper Extravaganza Tapered Face Brush Review + GIVEAWAY

Sigma F25s and F15
The Sigma F25 Tapered Face Brush has always been my favorite Sigma brush style, and I have accumulated nearly a dozen different variations over the years. The luxurious Copper Extravaganza version featured here, however, simply happens to be the the best of the F25s in my experience. Not only are the copper ferrules very unique (rose gold color), the bristles are quite soft and layered well — especially for the affordable price of $33 USD. The slightly pointed tip and rounded flat sides make this the ideal large powder brush, whether you want to apply powder foundation around the eyes and nose or bronzer into the hollows of the cheeks. I love that this brush style provides control and gives exact placement of product. Check out more details and the giveaway after the jump!

EM Michelle Phan Makeup Brushes Reviews, Photos, Giveaway

Despite the booming popularity of synthetic brushes, I still find that the perfect combination of quality, density, and shape are nearly impossible to find with synthetic fibers. EM Michelle Phan teamed up with master Japanese calligraphy brush makers to make some of the best that I have tried yet. The synthetic fibers are kind to my skin, with the right amount of give without losing any resistance. I do wish the handles were longer for storing and professional use purposes, but the shorter length is perfect for those who travel with makeup often.

My favorite of the eight is the luxurious All Over Face brush ($29 USD). It is ideal for use with powder foundations and setting powders, though it can be used to apply bronzer as well. It feels so plush against the face, and the brush is densely packed — not thin and floppy like other synthetic face brushes I have used in the past. The combination of fullness and resistance is a result of the brush head's slightly shorter bristles, approximately 1 cm shorter than the industry's standard powder brush. I love that the rounded and tapered synthetic fibers of this All Over Face brush allow for the most even distribution, and you can see in the video how it provides an airbrushed finish. Even though the $29 price tag may seem steep, it is worth every penny!

Note: I do love the Sigma Angled Flat Top Foundation brush for liquid foundation, but I cannot recommend the Mr. and Mrs. Bunny
synthetic brush kits since I find the powder and blush brushes too thin and lacking enough resistance for efficient blending.

The Pointed Foundation brush ($26 USD) is perfect for liquid and cream foundations. I am currently loving the combination of SUQQU's Frame Fix and Koh Gen Do's Aqua Foundation, and this brush is ideal for a streak-free application with the mix. A foundation brush has to be excellent for me to take the time to use it, since I much prefer to work with clean fingers on my own face. This pointed version, however, is excellent because it is precise enough for work around the corners of the nose and eyes yet allows for layering to build coverage. I blend using circular motions and then dab gently on the cheeks to build coverage.

The Flat Foundation brush ($26 USD) is officially one of my favorites for concealer application. If you do not mind paddle brushes and are looking for a mutli-tasker for foundation and concealer application, then this brush will be worth the full $26. I personally never use paddle styles for foundation, but I do find this tapered Flat Foundation brush is a wonderful tool for applying concealer under the eyes and on my acne scars since the larger surface area makes blending a breeze. It reminds me of an affordable version of Le Metier de Beaute's trusty concealer brush ($50 USD and also synthetic), just larger and straighter across the top.

The Angled Blush Brush ($24 USD) is loosely packed in comparison to the All Over Face or Pointed Foundation brushes, but it applies and blends color on the apples of the cheeks best. The edge can also be used to run bronzer or contour powder through the hollows of the cheeks for definition. This brush in particular feels extra soft against the face, so I highly recommend this for sensitive skin. The diagonal shape is reminiscent of Shu Uemura's Natural 20h brush.

The Angled Eyeliner brush ($12 USD) is perfect for use on the lash lines with powder eyeshadows or even gel liner if I were in a pinch. It is most reminiscent of Dior's eyeliner brush. The bristles are tapered, while EM's is angled, but both are very short in comparison to popular eyeliner brushes like MAC's 266. I have found the shorter height results in much less or no fall out when used with powders.

The All Over Shadow Brush ($15 USD) is a versatile eyeshadow application shape, basic but practical. I use the flat side of the brush for applying base shadows on the lids and the rounded edge to blend out the borders. Although it was intended for powder eyeshadows, the synthetic fibers are equally as efficient with cream products. The All Over Shadow is fuller than the Angled Shadow.

The Angled Shadow Brush ($15 USD) is intended for applying eyeshadow to the corners of the eyes as well as shaping the creases for more contour and depth. Try using the angled side to run across the middle of the lid and feel for the eye socket using windshield wiper motions. In the tutorial, I used it to pull the shadow shape out into a cat eye style to elongate my eyes.

The Lip Brush ($12 USD) is compatible with any lip formula. It applies lipstick and lip gloss smoothly, and the flat tip creates precise lines. I like to use this lip brush with heavier lipstick formulas since I can control the coverage. Instead of demonstrating the full pigmentation of Tom Ford's new Paradiso, I chose to demonstrate a sheerer, softer way to wear the lipstick.

BOTTOM LINE: Try starting with the All Over Face, Pointed Foundation, and Flat Foundation styles if you have been looking to splurge on quality synthetic fiber brushes!

To see the brushes in action, feel free to watch my tutorial (featuring the new limited edition Valentine's Day releases) below and join the giveaway to win a complete set of your own EM Michelle Phan brushes! Best of luck, everyone! xoxo
