Tom Ford Summer 2014 Eye and Cheek Palette in Unabashed Review, Photos, Swatches

TOM FORD Summer 2014 is a neatly edited collection of products. I will be featuring the star of the show today, the UNABASHED Eye and Cheek Palette, which comes housed in a white lacquered compact. I did mention it in my April Favorites video that went live yesterday, but I know many of you wanted to see a comprehensive review here. Check out all the details as well as swatches of all the shades after the jump!

The compact's exterior looks exactly like the Tom Ford Bronzing Powder, though the traditional cognac color has been replaced with the limited edition white color. The flat, oversized retro square is convenient to travel with, despite its larger size. Both the bronzer and this new summer palette are expensive splurges at $95 USD apiece, but they are wholly worth the extravagance. Nearly a year later, I've yet to hit pan on my Terra! The Unabashed Palette boasts three eyeshadows, one blush, and one bronzer, so many will be convinced by the variety to give it a try.

The blush, on my skin tone, is best described as a mix of Frantic Pink and Flush. The pigmentation is divine, as always. The gold shimmer is more pronounced than I had anticipated, but it's a flattering, luminous look for summer. For those concerned, the blush will not accentuate pores if applied with a light hand. The bronzer is supremely smooth as always. I personally prefer matte bronzers, but this is one I would wear on minimal makeup days or layered over my beloved Tom Ford Terra. On darker skin tones, the Unabashed bronzer will work beautifully as a natural highlighter. I also use it as an eyeshadow occasionally.

The eyeshadow trio is one of the most interesting and polarizing combinations that Tom Ford has released thus far. The top two shades may be reminiscent of the limited edition Tom Ford She Wolf Eyeshadow Trio that I always reach for on nights out, but Unabashed's shades are significantly warmer and softer — perfect for summer. I absolutely love them. Any time I wear Tom Ford eyeshadows, especially the glitters, women stop me or even flag me to ask what I have on my eyes. My devotion to them is not blind, I promise! I rarely ever use an eyeshadow primer, but they last all day and night with very minimal fading.

Now, let's delve into the individual shade break downs! The champagne-taupe glitter performs just as well as any of his others, and its semi-sheer base is perfect for layering. I love seeing the flashes of silver, gold, and green in the glitter. I wear it topped over the matte taupe eyeshadow in the palette, which works well with any eye look as a lid color and/or transitional color in the crease. The pigmentation of the taupe is incredibly smooth and easily buildable, which makes this one of my favorite Tom Ford eyeshadows ever. It appears more ashy-grey in the pan, but it pulls warmer on the skin.

The matte cobalt-navy eyeshadow is highly versatile, though the color is not quite what I expected. I recommend using a gentle touch and your softest natural brushes to prevent from wreaking havoc. The color is so intense that it stains my light-medium skin almost immediately upon contact. I swatched it alone and over a white base to show its vibrancy. When worn alone, it pulls teal. When layered alone, you can see in the swatches that it looks like a warmer navy. I love using it as an eyeliner, as pictured in the full look photo below.

This palette sold out at Neiman Marcus within a week of its release. It is still available online at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.

Bottom Line: The Unabashed palette is officially my Summer 2014 Travel Buddy, and I hope to see more Tom Ford Trios or even glitter + matte eyeshadow duos released someday!

    1. Yes, it's a quick one neutral eyeshadow and blush look for day and a glitter with bronzer for evenings! The blue is just a bonus :)

  2. Rae, Unabashed looks like it was custom created for you. It's stunning on you. You look polished and chic without looking contrived or over the top. And, isn't the name great? Unabashed! Definitely nothing apologetic or timid about Mr. Ford's approach to beauty! As for the cost, it's really very reasonable when you consider the number of products of excellent quality that you're getting. I spent much more on TF's summer collection last year and actually felt like I got a bargain this year! LOL I've worked out a few different looks using this palette and have been wearing it several times a week since getting it. It's interesting that the shade that is the most polarizing--the cobalt--is also the most versatile of the three shadows. From strong to soft, from graphic to hazy, it blends so smoothly and evenly that you can do just about anything with it. Unabashed is extraordinary in concept and perfect in execution. Who could ask for more?

    1. Thank you! I love how dummy-proof the colors are. The intensity of the blue isn't for everyone since it requires patience and skill, but it's very fun to play with! And you're absolutely right about the cost. 5 products vs. 1 bronzer color is much more convincing in my book, although I'm still hopelessly dedicated to Terra. It is the most phenomenal matte bronzer, and I will repurchase it as soon as I hit pan haha

  4. I was super hesitant about the cost but loved your review and the look! So I used a Nordy's gift card and bought this as a birthday gift to myself. Its on backorder for a couple of weeks. I can't wait to try it out. If you could do a tutorial or pictorial that would be much appreciated! Thanks Rae!
