Shu Uemura x Mika Ninagawa Spring 2014 'Forbidden Fruits' Collection Review + Photos

Shu Uemura has partnered up with renowned photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa for yet another creative, colorful collection. Mika created four new images and designs for this Spring 2014 collection — all inspired by the artistry of Shu Uemura. The four wonderlands Forbidden Fruits, Singing Forest, Curiosity & Melting Sweet Dreams were used for the packaging of the brand's cult products as well as for some of the limited edition shades. Discover the product details after the jump!

I will be featuring the 'Forbidden Fruits' wonderland here, complete with photos and swatches of the covetable treasures!

The Pressed Eyeshadow Refills pictured are G Gold, P 823, P 796, and P 995. The gold glitter shadow works best with a flat shader brush and is a lovely accent to any look. P 823 is a shimmery golden wheat that is butter soft and ultra smooth, with excellent payoff and no fall out. P 796 is a medium purple Creamy Eyeshadow Definer, not a pressed powder eyeshadow like the other three shades. This cream eyeshadow can be used as a base or for definition of the lower lash line. P 995 is a velvety, pearly black with silver shimmers that defines the crease and can also be used to smoke out the outer corner.

The pigmentation of all the eyeshadows is impressive, and the gold glitter sparkles nearly as brightly as Tom Ford's. Also, keep in mind the Custom Quad Case must be purchased separately to store your eyeshadow refills.

The Eye Shadow Spiral Duo in 01 is brand new and limited edition. The "melting sweet dream" candles inspired the adorable spiral design for the eyeshadow duo. Shu Uemura suggests mixing the spiral colors to transform the colors from light beige to medium brown and cool white to warm white. I absolutely love the creamy textures of these neutrals, and the swirl of champagne glitter enhances the versatility of the white. They blend effortlessly on the lids.

The new Tint in Gelato creates soft flushed cheeks and dewy stained lips. This tempting revolutionary creamy gelato texture glides across the lips for rich color payoff and a luminous look. They blend well with the fingertips for a natural, semi-matte sheen on the cheeks. I only have A01 and A02 currently, but I cannot wait to try some of the C (coral) shades! A little goes a long way, so they can be worn sheer like a stain or layered for intensity if desired.

The Nail Stickers in 01 are almost too pretty to use. The vivid world of Mika Ninagawa's designs are expressed on the nail stickers, and the kit includes a nail file and cuticle stick to polish up the manicure. Apply alone or combine with nail color as an accent.

The False Eyelashes are the Mini Neo Star-Glitz, limited edition half lashes with vivid wisps of pink, orange, and yellow. I love that they are encrusted with shiny stars to make the eyes sparkle.

Last but not least, the Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil is my favorite Shu Uemura formula. Stock up to add whimsy to any bathroom counter or even a vanity for decorative purposes. Use it before or after you drift off into Mika's dreamy wonderland!

Bottom Line: I highly recommend all the products in the Mika Ninagawa Forbidden Fruits collaboration, but I especially adore the new Eye Shadow Spiral Duo and the Tint in Gelato for the collectible packaging design and supremely creamy textures!

  2. I need those gelato tints! I heard they are a bit comparable to the YSL Kiss & Blush? But these have a bit of a different shade selection, which is only good, the more options we have the better!

    1. Not quite.. the YSL Kiss & Blush have much more slip! The SU Gelato is much creamier and richer in pigmentation, a lot more intense in one swipe :)
