Tom Ford LIP COLOR SHEER Lipstick Collection Review, Photos, Swatches

Tom Ford's Spring 2014 collection features a new collection of lipsticks called the Lip Color Sheer! This exclusive new collection features 8 indispensable shades, all housed in Tom Ford's original, retro ivory and gold case. The semi-translucent formula, in a distinct beveled form, contains a blend of moisturizing ingredients, such as Vitamin C and E, Shea Butter, and other natural oils. View all the swatches and individual shade break downs after the jump!

The model in the Spring 2014 campaign ad appears to be wearing a combination of Bitter Sweet — which she is holding — and In the Buff, which creates a lustrous and naturally nude beige lip on her complexion.

Since these lipsticks were touted as lip conditioners, I expected an ultra sheer hybrid lip balm-lip color formula. The Sheers, however, perform like traditional lipsticks! They more moisturizing and luminous than their counterpart, the richly opaque and creamy Lip Colors. I am delighted to share that these Sheer Lip Colors ($49 USD each) are officially my favorite Tom Ford lip product and will now join the ranks as one of my Holy Grail lipsticks!

There are four vivid colors, and they boast a smooth, rich texture and intense pigmentation. Sweet Spot, Firecracker, Paradiso, and Incorrigible are full coverage lipsticks that leave soft stains for all day (8  - 9 hours) wear.

Sweet Spot has just enough pink to prevent from casting a sickly sallow tone to my yellow-toned skin. This is the first orange lipstick that is actually flattering on me! I reach for peaches since oranges are so hard to wear, but I have been wearing this one most. It is more orange and much creamier than Chanel's Rouge Allure in Pimpante, one of my favorite peach lipsticks. Giorgio Armani's Rouge d'Armani Sheer in 301 is much sheerer in comparison.

Firecracker is a stunning orange-red. I generally avoid reds with orange undertones since I prefer reds with a pink lean to brighten up my complexion and teeth. Firecracker, however, is bold yet sensuous! EM Michelle Phan's Kiss Me is warm but not quite orange enough, while Giorgio Armani's Rouge d'Armani in 405 is a smidgen too orange and contains iridescent shimmer. I could never have predicted how much I'd adore it, but Firecracker is the creamiest and most pigmented of the eight Sheers so it is a must-have.

Paradiso is a very cheerful color. I assumed I would own an exact dupe of this when I first tried it on, but when I pulled comparisons, I could only find lipsticks that were too red (Chanel Pygmalion) or too pink (Chanel Genial - which I never wear since it is far more neon on the lips). Paradiso is not too bright so it could be appropriate for day wear when worn with a light hand, but I think it is ideally a summer color. This will look incredible against very fair and light skin!

Incorrigible is the most shimmery of this vivid set. The microshimmer is visible upon inspection of the bullet but it is imperceptible when worn on the lips. I own lots of marvelous fuchsia lipsticks, but Incorrigible is one of the few fuchsias that warms up and pulls more red on my skin. Too Faced's Fuchsia Shock is cooler in comparison, and though Guerlain Rouge G in Rose Desir has a similar shimmer content, it is much warmer and rosier.

The other four are more in line with the press release's description of semi-translucent. These shimmering nudes — In the Buff, Pink Dune, Bitter Sweet, and Summer Fling — are easier to wear and last an average of 6 hours.
  • IN THE BUFF is a slightly frosty neutral BEIGE
  • PINK DUNE is a softly glimmering seashell PINK-BEIGE
  • BITTER SWEET is a sophisticated, sheer CHOCOLATE-PLUM (least shimmery of this set)
  • SUMMER FLING is a warm LIGHT PINK with iridescent shimmer (most like a TF Lip Shine)

In The Buff is one of my favorites. At first glance, I thought it would look exactly like the Bare Lip Shine, but Bare is shimmery rather than frosty and has a fluid, glossy finish due to the higher water content. In the Buff is beautiful with a smoky eye or heavier eye makeup in general since it is more dramatic due to the slightly frosty finish. It is somewhat paler than I expected, but it is a beautiful true nude and significantly easier to pull off than the Vanilla Suede Lip Color.

Pink Dune is a My Lips But Better lipstick. I love the duochrome effect since it glistens, as if my lips were drenched in a liquid highlighter. It is more sandy-pink than nude like In the Buff and yes, owning both is justifiable. I find that this color can be worn with any makeup look, natural or dramatic. This shade is the most unique to my collection, and I could barely find lip glosses close enough to swatch. Tom Ford's Pink Guilt has the same duochrome effect, though it is deeper and darker in overall color (pink-brown). Lancôme's Juicy Tube in Hallucination has a gorgeous golden glow, but the base is a translucent beige (not enough pink).

Bitter Sweet is the sleeper shade. It is mellow, not vampy at all! Most dark lipstick shades tend to age me about ten years, but Bitter Sweet is surprisingly wearable and not too mature or matronly. I believe its sheer nature lends itself a more versatile finish, and it will look supremely natural on dark skin. It is about as shimmery as Incorrigible. The only similar shade that I can recall is Giorgio Armani's new Spring 2014 Rouge d'Armani Sheer in 614, though it leans plum while Bitter Sweet is more chocolate.

Summer Fling was the first to sell out on Nordstrom.com. It is the most universally flattering, pretty peach-pink shade, but I do wish it had Bitter Sweet's smoother texture. The iridescent shimmer is beautiful but is a hint reminiscent of the Tom Ford Lip Shines. A mix of Frolic (coral-peach) and Quiver (cool pink) yields a fairly similar color, except the Lip Shine combination is far more sparkly and glossy. I do not find Summer Fling a particularly remarkable color, but it is a lovely reliable color that is appropriate for any occasion, and that is the appeal!

For a bit of clarification: In The Buff and Pink Dune are the most shimmery, but the effect is more of a reflective sheen. Incorrigible and Bitter Sweet have slightly less microshimmer, so the lips still feel comfortable and smooth. Summer Fling may not have the most shimmer, but it positively has the largest shimmer particles. If you have dry, ultra-sensitive lips, Summer Fling will feel the least creamy upon initial application. It will, however, become more emollient once it has a chance to warm up on the lips.

I love them all, but here is my order of preference:
In The Buff, Pink Dune, Sweet Spot, Firecracker, Incorrigible, Bitter Sweet, Paradiso, Summer Fling.
All shades available at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and Selfridges.
Select colors available though Nordstrom.

The Tom Ford Lip Sheers are so impressive. It is one of the few lipstick formulas that actually hydrates my lips during wear and even helps them look their best after. I do wish these Lip Sheers would be made permanent because I feel that they are the perfect balance of color, subtle shimmer, and hydration. If you found some of the classic Lip Colors too satin/matte and the Lip Shines too shimmery/glossy, the Lip Sheers may be the winning lipstick formula for you!

Bottom Line: This limited edition Tom Ford Sheer Collection claimed to deliver an irresistible effect that complements sun-kissed skin, but this beautifully edited line-up of lipsticks exceeded my expectations because I will be wearing these shades all year round!

  2. Wow those are great! I'll be getting my first TF blush and lipstick this next week and I'm beyond excited! These might come soo late here, so I'll have to get one from the classic lipstick line.
Loved the images and the review though, I first thought these would be the sheerest line of TF but it doesn't seem to be, just like you said!

  3. Thanks very much for the swatches, super helpful for those of us who has to order sight unseen. I ordered Paradiso and Summer Fling, thinking Sweet Spot would be too warm on my natural to cool complexion, I am very excited to try this lip formula out.

    1. Thanks so much for reading, Sara! Paradiso and Summer Fling will look gorgeous on my complexion, but I think Sweet Spot would really enhance your eyes! You can always line your lips with a pink lipliner first to manipulate the color.. I think it's worth a try ;)

  11. Hi,
I've read a review that says Paradiso also has shimmer in it, is that true? My lips are so dry & sensitive, I cannot wear shimmery lipstick or it'll dries my lips out.
Betweet Paradiso & Incorrigible, which one that has the least amount of shimmer particles?

    Thanks! :)

    1. There is definitely more shimmer in Incorrigible.. you can see actually see it in the bullet in one of the photos. And someone misinformed you, as there is NO shimmer in Paradiso. I have examined it and swatched it in both natural and artificial lighting.

  13. Many of us seem to follow the same blogs so I know many of you are aware that I purchased Summer Fling and Paradiso and absolutely love them. Tom Ford has definitely come up with a winner with this particular formulation and the glossy semi-opaque finish. It's absolutely perfect for this time of year. Rae, your pictures are color true and outstanding! They're sure to be a great help to your readers who don't have access to a TF counter. And your comparison swatches help put the new colors into perspective. Thank you!

Ade, I'm on week two of wearing my selections and still haven't had any problem with my chronically dry lips. Paradiso should suit you, especially if you love tropical flower types of colors. It has a beautiful glossy sheen without any visible glitter. Because my lips are so dry, when I wear Summer Fling, I alternate my lipstick reapplication with an application of lip balm. With Paradiso, I don't have to do that :-)

Echo what said above, your photos are so awesome that I only needed to point my friends (guys too) to your blog when they ask for help getting Valentine presents. The girls and I have the tradition to buy each other something from cosmetic counter for Pink's Day!
