Baked Disappointment: Chanel Tentation Cuivree Quad Review and Photos

Photobucket

Baked products are all the rage still but I don't favor them - never did, never will. They look so pretty, especially so if they're sitting in even prettier Chanel packaging, but they never managed to win me over. Maybe it's because I'm a stout traditionalist.

But some of you notified me that you wanted a review for this Holiday piece because you didn't know whether you should purchase it or not. If you didn't, I'm glad you refrained! The baked Euro formula is complete crap for $56+tax. Jojoba of mymakeupreviews.com is a Chanel fan like me but she rarely purchases, and rarely ever recommends, the Euro quad releases.. I now see why!

Chanel will merge all production to France or France & Italy [it is unclear as of yet] next year so I am praying that they won't discontinue the US shadow formula. I am a die-hard Chanel fiend but I would definitely stop purchasing the quads if that happened. The Euro shadows look enticing in the pan but they are too prone to fall-out and the shimmers are chunky. The pigmentation is sheer to medium. That wouldn't be an issue if they were easy to build up, but alas, they are not. You MUST use a primer with these shadows or they won't last more than a couple hours on the lids. On the other hand, the US shadows I own are gorgeous - velvety smooth with very little to no fall-out. Apparently, it's the mineral oil but I do not care!

Now, for a breakdown of the colors: The ivory-beige shade is lovely as a highlighter. The shimmering pink and copper-brown contain iridescent glitter particles [primary culprit of the fall-out] and the burgundy brown has the best texture of the bunch. The ivory is a touch powdery, while the pink and copper-brown are quite sheer. The burgundy brown, on the other hand, is densely pigmented and can be used wet as a liner. It, however, does not hold a candle to the burgundy brown in my Kaska Beige [US] quad. I will be keeping this, as I have already planned to film a Chanel Holiday tutorial and because the shades are indeed wearable, but I will no longer purchase any Euro/baked quads. If this were a blue-themed quad, it would have gone back already!

For the price, the quality is underwhelming and the color way is not unique enough to merit purchase for most. [Edit: Unless used wet!]

  1. great review. this may sound like a silly question but how can i tell if a chanel quad is baked? i live in australia and i'm not sure whether we get the euro or the US quads. thanks

  2. Faye - It's not a silly question at all! AU gets the Euro version :) The US quads have square shadows, not domes! You can check my Chanel Fall tutorial on YT to see an example.

  5. Is it like the Enigma quad in terms of quality? I'm still eyeing that one off.

  7. I almost went for this, but after swatching it at 3 different Chanel counters, I finally threw in the towel and accepted the fact that this quad is crap. Your review seals the coffin. Rae, it is so kind of you to purchase and review this for your viewers and readers. Your dedication is well-appreciated!

  10. Hey rae,
This has nothing to do with your entry but I thought that this would the fastest to reach you. Could you tell me some tips on how to match foundation shades online! Im Nc 20 and I want to try Shu Uemura's liquid foundation and I just cannot decide which would be my shade! If you can help I would really appreciate it! Thanks

  11. Anon - Unfortunately, I do not use Shu Uemura foundations so I am not familiar with their number system. Sorry!

  12. I have to agree with Natalie on this one.
I like the baked formula and I didn't experiment any fallouts either (reminds me of MAC 1st generation Mineralize eye shadows, the case tend to get messy). It's true that the pigmentation is medium but I prefer my shadows this way.

I can't compare with the US formula though, I have never have any Chanel US quad.

However, they should keep the US formula (if it's indeed better) and the Euro dome shape, hehe.
    That would be nice.

  13. Chanel is a French company, and I highly doubt that they would sell a lesser product in Europe. I have 2 Chanel quads bought in Europe and have never had any problems. It's not that the whole world gets a crap version and the oh-so-great USA get a brilliant version. Chanel would not sell crap in their own country. Thank you.

  14. Pammie - We all have different preferences and experiences. That's the whole point of blogging, to share! Glad you and Natalie are liking your quads :) The US shadows are smoother because they use less glitter, a completely different formula!

Madii - This post was in no way intended to offend your taste. I just thought the product was subpar for the hefty price, and that is only my own opinion. This palette is very glittery, a completely different formula that we have (and are used to) in the US! Besides, I posted an update about this quad a month later.. it's much better when used wet!
