PRO TIPS | Q&A Session with Burberry Make-up Artistic Consultant Wendy Rowe

I have been fortunate to know Wendy Rowe, Burberry's Make-up Artistic Consultant, for a couple years now. She is one of the kindest, most down-to-earth, refreshing and humble talents I have ever met! Since many of you are interested in pro tips and tricks, she was kind enough to sit down for a Q&A session.

Your burning questions were incorporated into this interview, so I hope you find what you're looking for! Many thanks to Wendy for being so helpful and Burberry for allowing me to use their lovely photos xo

Q: What are your top 3 Burberry makeup picks and why?

1. Burberry Effortless Contour Pen. This is a product I’ve actually been using for years, so it’s great Burberry has been able to produce it for everybody to enjoy.

2. Burberry Sheer Concealers. I use these on myself and I use them at work all the time. They have a consistency that’s so gorgeous, it covers without you seeing it. It’s quite a miracle concealer as it keeps the skin looking young.

3. Burberry Lip Velvet. This is a super comfortable lipstick to wear, the colours are great, the pigments are great and it’s long lasting.

Q: The models you generally work with have beautiful skin. How can the everyday woman achieve the fresh-faced look without caking on the foundation and concealer to cover redness and other skin imperfections?

Number one, not all models have great skin, it’s my job to make it look like they do. Of course you don’t need to put loads of products on, you just need to use the right products on the areas you need to disguise.

Q: How do you create the illusion of natural fullness on very thin, sparse brows?

Use Burberry Effortless Eyebrow Definer and sweep it across the brow to create a fuller brow. Don’t put too much colour on as this will not look real. If your brows are quite sparse you can’t put on deep pigment as it will look unnatural, you just need to create a slightly bigger shadow.

Q: Do you recommend using the Burberry Effortless Contouring Pen on its own or layering it with the Earthy Blush?

I would definitely use it on its own and I would only layer with it if you have foundation on, as well as powder, then you could follow with Burberry Light Glow in Earthy Blush if you felt like you needed more contouring.

Q: I'm obsessed with the Burberry Wet & Dry Shadows, but I tend to wear them dry. Do you recommend using water or another mixing medium when applying them wet?

I would use Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base to mix them with as this gives a much better consistency than using water which would make them harder to move. I would only use water if I was doing a strong eye line that you could then blend.

Q: What is best method for concealing active blemishes?

It’s hard to conceal active blemishes which is why I take skincare very seriously. Just conceal the areas that are discoloured, don’t apply foundation to areas you don’t need to hide. Just use Burberry Cashmere Concealer on the blemish and then apply a powder to set.

Q: How would you describe the British beauty look? What makes it unique?

It is effortless, can be quite natural and all about celebrating your features, characteristics and differences.

Q: I love the Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom colors, but I have extremely dry lips. How do I prevent it from accentuating lip lines and flakiness?

I would recommend just using Lip & Cheek Bloom on your cheeks, sometimes double wear doesn’t suit everybody so do what works best for you. Try Burberry First Kiss if you have dry lips as it is super moisturising.

Q: Most women do not have time to re-do their makeup on a Friday night out. What are your tips for transforming a daytime look into an evening look?

When updating your day’s make-up for the evening, your main objective should be to make your eyes darker. Start with the skin, concealing any blemishes, and clean up under the eyes. To intensify the eyes, use an eye pencil and liner. It doesn’t have to be black – it could be brown, green or gold – and eye pencil can be applied inside the waterline. Use a black or brown eyeliner along the lash line and finish by applying some more mascara.

Military Red :: Redwood :: Poppy Red
Q: What lipstick shade do you find the most universally flattering?

[Burberry] Poppy Red Kisses works on just about everybody.

Q: A lot of my readers are intrigued by red lips but are too scared to wear them out in public. Do you have any tips for how they can overcome their fear and wear bold colors with confidence?

I recommend applying the lipstick when you’re at home, forget you have it on and then just go out! Don’t get too hung up about not feeling like wearing a red lip – just do what makes you feel comfortable. The only thing to be conscious of when wearing red lipstick is that your skin is perfect.

Q: Even waterproof eyeliner formulas smudge on me. How do I prevent this?

Try applying the eyeliner in a thinner line, as this should give more staying power than a thicker one.

Q: You are now the Make-up Artistic Consultant for Burberry, but how did you get started as a makeup artist?

I was always interested in fashion, film and music. I started in graphics, I decided I wanted to do make-up because I liked the way it felt to make people look different and enhance their beauty. It was different back then, I had to work really, really hard on set and backstage at shows to develop my skill set so I understood all the different types of skin, face shapes and environmental issues. It’s a tough industry but a little bit of hard work doesn’t hurt!

Q: What do you enjoy most about working backstage on runway models?

The fact that I know them all, so it’s quite nice to see people outside of the studio. I like working at a fast pace, it’s great to be part of a big event and to help create an entertaining show.
