Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in 02 Terra Review, Photos, Swatches

The Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Terra ($95 USD) is the newest addition to my arsenal of matte bronzers, but it is by far my favorite. I adore bronzer and wear it more regularly than any other color product, so I had high expectations for Terra. Hence, I am thrilled to announce that Tom Ford's Bronzing Powder is as phenomenal as others have claimed. Check out more details and swatches after the jump!

Terra is a cool-toned, matte bronzer that lasts flawlessly for 8 to 10 hours on my normal skin. The formula is not powdery or drying whatsoever, and it melts seamlessly for a soft focus effect — even on dry skin. It never looks patchy or streaky on the face and does not accentuate pores. I highly recommend purchasing the Tom Ford Bronzer Brush [reviewed HERE] to pair with Terra since it is one of the few brushes that is dense enough to pick up the silky powder and distribute it easily across the face.

Terra's color is not exceptionally dark, so it is ideal for fair to medium skin tones. It, however, can be layered on even tan complexions for full coverage color. Terra leans noticeably cooler against my strong yellow  undertones, which makes this bronzer so versatile. It provides warmth on the tops of my cheeks and edges of my forehead, while adding a hint of shadowing below my cheekbone (thanks to the cool, slightly grey lean).

The Tom Ford Bronzing Powder houses 21 grams of product in an extra large compact, so it is truly worth every penny since it should last at least a year with daily use. The packaging is wide but flat, glamorous and retro. Since there is no locking mechanism with a spring as with traditional snap closure compacts, however, the Tom Ford Bronzing Powder compact is more cumbersome to open. Simply place one thumb firmly on one of the front corners of the compact's bottom lip and use your fingers to hold the hinge behind the compact to support its weight. Then place your other thumb on top of the centered Tom Ford embossment of the lid and push just the top panel up.. voilà!

I have been asked for comparisons, so I will share swatches of my favorite matte bronzers. The Bobbi Brown (more red) and Tarte (more orange) bronzers are much deeper and darker. They should be used with a light hand and fluffy bronzer brushes for the most natural, diffused look possible on fair to light-medium skins. The Guerlain Terracotta Mineral Loose Powder Bronzer in 2 is the most similar to Tom Ford's Bronzing Powder in texture (both ultra fine and silky), but the Guerlain bronzer's color is noticeably more peach and the formula a tad more moisturizing. Tom Ford's Terra is the only bronzer to provide a warming yet sculpting effect.

NOTE: Some have asked about Gold Dust, the other Bronzing Powder that Tom Ford currently offers. Gold Dust is a warmer color, so it has a traditional golden lean with microshimmer. It is beautiful and more pigmented than Terra, but I generally prefer matte powders since they are better suited for everyday wear. I dusted Terra lightly along my forehead's hairline, across my cheekbones and jawline, and down the sides of my nose in the photo below. The effect shown below is subtle, but I have demonstrated how buildable Terra can be in my video tutorial here

You can find Terra at Neiman MarcusSaks Fifth Avenue, and Selfridges (for my British readers)

Bottom Line: Traditional sculpting powders can be difficult to master, so I highly recommend Tom Ford's Bronzing Powder in Terra for an effortlessly warm yet sculpted complexion!
