Since my skin is currently healing from my chemical peel, which I shared on my Instagram story, here is a preview of my upcoming Acne Covering tutorial with the five concealers I will be showing in action. Again, I apologize for the delays with that video because I've had every audio and lighting issue imaginable which is why I've re-filmed it four times already! Instead of dwelling on that, however, I wanted to share why these are the best concealers for my normal/dry acne-prone skin.
I use Laura Mercier's Secret Camouflage in SC-4 when I need long-lasting full coverage for days when I'm filming or shooting, featured here in my October Favorites video. You can use this formula as an eyeshadow base or for contouring as well. The harder texture of the concealer does give it more of a learning curve, but it looks the most natural, even on flaky bits. It looks like real skin because it adheres to the skin without feeling sticky or heavy. The two shades provided allows for mixing and matching which solves the challenge of my noticeably darker forehead.
It took me a couple weeks to master this product, but the key is to use the Secret Camouflage Brush and only this brush. I normally like to use my fingertips to blend — definitely not in this case. I've also tried many other concealer brushes and tools, but to pinpoint active blemishes and "fill in" any larger pores, the pointed tip of the synthetic Secret Camouflage brush works best. This concealer and brush duo is why my skin, despite regular break outs, looks relatively flawless on camera!
On the daily, when I am not filming, I use a much faster and more convenient combination. Ever since I was introduced to the By Terry Click Stick Stylo Expert at NYFW in September, I have been obsessed. It's so fast and easy to tap on and build coverage straight from the tube! I'll share the two different ways I like to apply No.3 Cream Beige in my tutorial, but believe me, this is my every day makeup essential. It is almost as long-lasting as Laura's but it has a slightly more powdery finish. To set I sweep on a touch of the By Terry Powder Dual Powder Compact in 4 Nude Beige which I reviewed on YouTube here, and my skin looks magically better in just under 60 seconds.
Before I discovered the By Terry concealer, I was using Dior's Star concealer which was recently discontinued, sadly. It has a creamy fluid formula — which is very similar to the matching foundation — so it blends well on top of dry patches and blemishes. I wouldn't say it is the most budge-proof but it usually lasts for a good six to eight hours if you don't touch or rub your face against anything.
Here are two options that are a bit less cost prohibitive. I tried the NARS Soft Matte concealer in Medium 1 Custard on a whim, and it has a lot of slip, but works well to cover redness and scarring. Custard is a perfect effortless color match for my cheeks so I keep this one around for days when my skin is calmer and better behaved. Do not blend with your fingertips. Use the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Brush or this softer natural one.
I also like the new IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Breakout concealer in Medium because it helps to dry out pimples without calling too much attention to them. There is salicylic acid in this formula, so only use it to strategically spot treat; do not apply it all over your face. Use this brush to gently pat on top of and around pimples. Note: this one oxidizes in color so I noticed it looks a touch darker throughout the day.
Last but not least I wanted to mention that I always set my concealer with my coveted Burberry Fresh Glow Powder Foundation in 20. Nothing beats the coverage and finish or wear time. I recommend By Terry's Powder Compact if you want something less flat and more luminous, but the coverage is lighter. Speaking from experience, I understand the preference for full coverage when the complexion and hormones are not cooperating. If you only have minor acne, I recommend setting your concealer with a loose powder. I recommend Lancome Absolu Loose or Smashbox Halo for normal/dry skin or Laura Mercier Translucent Loose for oily skin.
